Many companies do not place much emphasis on the pre-selection
of applicants. We are convinced this is a mistake. There
are several good reasons not to abstain from a high
quality pre-selection.
An elaborate selection procedure such as the assessment
center is quite costly - reason enough to confine the
number of applicants to a minimum before inviting them
to the assessment center. A high quality pre-selection
process can improve selection efficiency without leading
to a loss in the quality of the hiring decision.
Apart from material costs, immaterial costs should
also be considered. Turning applicants down in a late
stage of the selection process may provoke negative
reactions by the applicants. Thus, inept applicants
should be identified at an early stage in the selection
process.
